The Edvard Grieg field in the North Sea has become one of the lowest carbon intensive producers per barrel in the industry. This achievement has led to the first low carbon certification for an oil producer. OMV has a stake of 20% in the field, which is operated by Lundin Norway.
An independent assessment by Intertek of the Edvard Grieg field verified a carbon intensity of upstream emissions in 2019 to 3.8 KgCO2e per barrel of oil equivalents. This is a record low CO2 footprint from an offshore field. The world average is 20 KgCO2e per barrel.
Background information:
Intertek is a global quality assurance provider and issues the certification under its carbon intensity certification program (CarbonClear-CI-01). The emissions measured in the program comes from energy consumption, transportation, flaring, venting and consumable materials.
