What Are Synthetic Fuels?
Synthetic fuels, often referred to as eFuels, are produced by combining green hydrogen, generated using renewable electricity, with captured CO₂, primarily from biogenic CO₂ and other renewable carbon streams. The resulting molecules can be used as feedstock in the chemical industry, replacing fossil feedstocks, or to produce synthetic fuel components and fuels that can be drop-in in existing engines, infrastructure, and supply chains, enabling their use within today's energy and transport systems. As demand for alternatives to fossil fuels grows, synthetic fuels are expected to play an increasingly important role alongside fuels made from renewable and circular feedstock.

Alongside sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), eSAF provides an additional pathway to reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions compared with conventional kerosene. eSAF can be used within existing aviation infrastructure once blended with conventional kerosene in accordance with applicable fuel standards. OMV is advancing synthetic fuel pathways and preparing the capabilities needed to expand its portfolio over time.
