Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) performance

At OMV, we place great importance in working with the ESG rating agencies. This helps us drive sustainability agenda forward and to make continuous improvements in terms of sustainability.


In 2021, OMV scored 72 points in the SAM Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA), putting it in the 94th percentile of its industry. Based on this result, OMV received the following distinctions: inclusion in the DJSI World, DJSI Europe, S&P Europe 350 ESG Index, SAM Sustainability Yearbook. OMV is included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI World) since 2018. The inclusion was confirmed for the fourth consecutive time in November 2021, positioning OMV among the top 10% oil and gas companies in terms of Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) performance. OMV is the only Austrian company included in the DJSI World Index. 
OMV was one of 19 Oil & Gas Integrated & Upstream companies included in the SAM Yearbook as sustainability leaders. This puts OMV among the top 14% of assessed companies in its industry. In 2021, 7.554 companies across 61 industries were assessed in the SAM Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA). 


In 2021, OMV Aktiengesellschaft received a rating of AAA (on a scale of AAA-CCC) in the MSCI ESG Ratings assessment.1 OMV receives "AAA" rating for the ninth year in a row. This score places OMV among the best 10% oil and gas companies in terms of ESG performance. OMV is represented in many MSCI-Indices, for example the ACWI ESG Leaders Index and the ACWI Low Carbon Leaders Index.


OMV attained Prime Status according to the ISS ESG rating with a score of B-, which positions the Company among the top 10% oil and gas companies with the best ESG performance. In the ISS QualityScore, OMV has a score of 1 (best) in all three categories Environment, Social, and Governance.



OMV is ranked in the top 7% of the Integrated Oil&Gas sector in Sustainalytics’ ESG Risk Ratings as of December 2021, achieving a score of 26.7 (medium risk). OMV’s management of sustainability is rated as strong. OMV maintained its notation in STOXX® Global ESG Leaders Index (based on the rating from Sustainalytics).


Moody's ESG Solutions
As per 2022, OMV is included in the Euronext Vigeo index Eurozone 120 (based on its ratings by Moody’s ESG Solutions), and is thus among 120 companies in the Eurozone region with the most advanced Environmental, Social and Governance performance according to Vigeo Eiris. Euronext is the primary exchange in the Eurozone and plays a key role at the heart of Europe’s capital and financial markets. OMV scored 59 points in the ESG Scorecard 2021 and is thus the fourth best company in its sector.


In 2021, OMV achieved the Platinum Medal in the annual EcoVadis sustainability assessment for the first time. EcoVadis is a provider of universal sustainability ratings, with more than 75,000 companies from over 200 industries taking part and committing to ensuring responsible sourcing throughout the supply chain. This result places OMV in the top 1 percent of all 75,000 companies rated globally by EcoVadis.



In December 2021, CDP published the results of its latest analysis of 13,126 companies worldwide in the climate change category. Here OMV was awarded the ranking of "Leadership A–“ for the sixth time in a row, and an A- in the Supplier Engagement Rating. This makes OMV one of the top twenty companies in the global oil and gas sector. In Austria OMV is one of the seven highest ranked companies regardless of sector. OMV has been providing data to CDP for it to evaluate its transparency and performance with regard to climate change since 2011. 


FTSE Russell (the trading name of FTSE International Limited and Frank Russell Company) confirms that OMV has been independently assessed according to the FTSE4Good criteria, and has satisfied the requirements to become a constituent of the FTSE4Good Index Series. OMV has been confirmed as a constituent of FTSE4Good Index Series consecutively every year since 2015.
