Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Decarbonizing aviation is critical. OMV's sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is an immediately available solution that reduces the carbon footprint of aviation fuel over its lifecycle. With almost the same chemical characteristics as conventional kerosene, SAF is suitable for all aircraft engines and airport infrastructure.
Reducing the carbon footprint of air travel at the source
SAF is a renewable alternative to conventional kerosene that contributes to over 80% lower carbon emissions over its lifecycle. To stimulate the emerging SAF market at an early stage, we have produced SAF at the Schwechat Refinery in Austria already in 2022.
Unlike carbon offsetting, SAF tackles the problem at its source, directly reducing emissions within the aviation sector itself.
1. Plants grow and absorb CO2
2. Vegetable oil is used for cooking
3. Used cooking oil (UCO) is collected and taken to a pre-treatment facility
4. The UCO is sent to the refinery
5. The oil is hydrotreated and processed
6. What remains is sustainable fuel and water
7. The sustainable fuel is blended with kerosene and delivered to the airport, where it is loaded into planes’ tanks
8. Flying releases CO2 into the air… which is absorbed by plants as they grow
Leading the Way in SAF Adoption
Our goal is to become a leading SAF supplier by 2030, supported by a robust project pipeline that positions us for rapid growth. A major milestone is underway with the construction of a large-scale plant at our Petrobrazi refinery in Romania, which began in February 2025. Once operational, this facility will make us the first major producer of renewable fuels in Southeast Europe.
In Europe, the ReFuelEU legislation now mandates that 2% of aviation fuel must be SAF, with the share set to rise gradually to 70% by 2050. At OMV, we are fully prepared to meet this requirement at relevant airports, backed by our investment in state-of-the-art blending facilities at the Schwechat Refinery in Austria and the Burghausen Refinery in Germany. This facility enables the precise integration of SAF with conventional jet fuel in compliance with EU standards, ensuring optimal performance and safety. We are committed to enabling all our customers, including those at non-EU airports, to reach their sustainability goals and advance SAF adoption beyond EU compliance.
SAF Business Solutions
SAF Business Solutions is an innovative program that allows companies to reduce their scope 3 emissions from air travel and freight using SAF certificates.
Former tennis professional and Grand Slam winner Dominic Thiem uses SAF certificates to reduce the carbon footprint of his business air travel. His longstanding commitment to environmental protection makes him an ideal partner for OMV.
