Innovative solutions by OMV
OMV is the first Austrian company to produce sustainable fuels with biogenic components and operates its own nationwide filling station network.
The sustainability of the biogenic components OMV applies is ISCC-EU certified, demonstrating our compliance with the highest legal European sustainability standards. Furthermore, OMV also meets the requirements of the Renewable Energy Directive of the European Union, which focuses on applying sufficient environmental and social principles along the entire biofuel supply chain.
Vegetable oil fuels
Based on pre-treated vegetable oils, such as rapeseed, sunflower, and soy, we produce bio-based fuels boasting characteristics nearly identical to those of fossil fuels. Waste products such as used cooking oil and advanced feedstocks are also used. The biogenic fraction is already added during production.
The application of this co-processing process leads to a reduction of OMVʼs CO2 footprint by up to 360,000 tons of CO2 per year. In order to be able to produce large quantities of bio-based fuel in the future, OMV has invested approx. EUR 200 million in the construction of a co-processing plant at its Schwechat refinery.

Biofuel blends
Traditional fossil-based fuels are mixed with biofuels such as bioethanol or propanol - without the use of constituents from food production.
Bioethanol
Produced exclusively from cellulose scrap, bioethanol is fermented and distilled. No food or animal feed is used. By substituting fossil fuels, OMV saves approx. 45,000 metric tons of CO2 per year, thus reducing the carbon intensity of the OMV product portfolio.
Propanol
In 2024, OMV will start using a patented process developed inhouse to produce the bio-based alcohol propanol from waste glycerol and use it as an advanced biofuel component in gasoline. OMV is set to invest approx. EUR 36 million to reach production capacities of 1.25 million liters of propanol per year. A next step for an industrial production of 125 million liters of propanol would save approx. 250,000 tons of CO2 emissions (Scope 1 -3).

Synthetic fuels/e-fuels
Synthetic fuels are based on a chemical combination of hydrogen and carbon that does not require a single drop of refined crude oil. As an alternative to fossil fuels, they have great potential and can draw on an existing global infrastructure. Air, heavy load and naval transport, in particular, could benefit from synthetic fuels in the future.
Manufacturing e-fuels
Synthetic fuels allow for CO2 savings of approx. 90 to 95% compared to fossil-based fuels. OMV is part of a consortium currently working on the development of new processes and technologies. The Methanol-to-SAF project aims to produce sustainable aviation fuel from methanol, CO2 and green hydrogen.
