SAF Business Solutions for Companies
As a longstanding partner to the aviation industry, OMV brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the emerging SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuels) market. The newly developed SAF Business Solutions are tailored to help organizations accomplish their Scope 3 emission reduction goals, such as those from air travel and/or the air transportation of goods. In cooperation with independent global organization RSB, OMV is piloting an innovative chain-of-custody model that allows OMV to reliably and verifiably transfer the environmental benefits of SAF in the form of SAF certificates. The main advantage over CO2 offsetting is the real and immediate reduction of emissions at the source.
OMV has been producing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) at the Schwechat refinery in Austria since 2022 by co-processing sustainable and regional raw materials, in particular used cooking oil. SAF ensures a reduction in CO2 emissions of more than 80% compared to conventional kerosene.

What are Scope 3 emissions?
According to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, Scope 3 emissions are indirect greenhouse gas emissions that result from activities that are not directly caused by a company but are generated by its business activities. These emissions are generated across a company's entire value chain. They include emissions from the use of products sold, business travel, the production of raw materials, the transportation of goods and the disposal of waste.
Scope 3 emissions are crucial for a comprehensive assessment of a company's environmental impact and require careful analysis and inclusion of various external sources to take appropriate measures to reduce these emissions.
What is a chain-of-custody model?
Generally speaking, a chain-of-custody model is a system that tracks the exact progress and complete documentation of a product or good along the entire supply chain. The origin, manufacture, processing, and transport of a product can be monitored and documented using this model. Companies can ensure compliance with standards, certifications, or sustainable practices along their supply chain by implementing a chain-of-custody model.
OMV’s piloted platform is guided by the RSB Book & Claim System – a set of principles and online tracking system that has been developed through a global multi-stakeholder process to ensure that the use of this chain of custody model provides full traceability and credibility, as well as a demonstrable climate impact.
