Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) performance

At OMV, we place great importance in working with the ESG rating agencies. This helps us drive sustainability agenda forward and to make continuous improvements in terms of sustainability.

Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI World)
OMV is included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI World) since 2018. The inclusion was confirmed for the third consecutive time in November 2020, positioning OMV among the top 10% oil and gas companies in terms of Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) performance. OMV is the only Austrian company included in the DJSI World Index. Launched in 1999, the DJSI World represents the gold standard for corporate sustainability and is the first global index to track the leading sustainability-driven companies based on SAM’s analysis of financially material ESG factors.

SAM Sustainability Yearbook
OMV was one of 9 Oil & Gas Integrated & Upstream companies included in the SAM Yearbook as sustainability leaders. This puts OMV among the top 15% of assessed companies in its industry. In 2019, 4,710 companies across 61 industries were assessed in the SAM Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA). Based on this assessment, the 2020 Yearbook summarizes the results, placing companies with the most significant economic, environmental and social performance in Gold, Silver, Bronze Class of Award. Every year since 2004, the Sustainability Yearbook has showcased the sustainability performance of the world’s largest companies in each industry as determined by their score in SAM’s annual Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA).

S&P Europe 350 ESG Index
OMV is one of the 238 companies included in the S&P Europe 350 ESG Index - one of the recently launched sustainability focused S&P indices. Following SAM's Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA), OMV is one of 5 companies in the SAM industry to be included in the S&P Europe 350 ESG Index, with an S&P DJI ESG score of 90.76. The index targets 75% of each GICS1 Industry Group's market cap with inclusion in part determined by this ESG score.

CDP Climate Change

In December 2020, CDP published the results of its latest analysis of 9,526 companies worldwide in the climate change category. Here OMV was awarded the ranking of "Leadership A–“ for the fifth time in a row. This makes OMV one of the top twenty companies in the global oil and gas sector. In Austria OMV is one of the five highest ranked companies regardless of sector.
OMV has been providing data to CDP for it to evaluate its transparency and performance with regard to climate change since 2011. CDP is a not-for-profit organization that runs the leading global disclosure system for the management of environmental impacts. The CDP methodology provides a score which assesses progress towards environmental stewardship and CDP has built up the world's most comprehensive collection of self-reported environmental data.


OMV attained Prime Status according to the ISS ESG rating with a score of B-, which positions the Company among the top 5% oil and gas companies with the best ESG performance.

Institutional Shareholder Services Inc. (ISS) is the world’s leading provider of corporate governance and responsible investment (RI) solutions for asset owners, asset managers, hedge funds, and asset service providers. ISS’ experienced research team provides comprehensive proxy analyses and complete vote recommendations for approximately 40,000 meetings annually in around 117 markets worldwide. ISS provides updates on a company score in the categories of Governance, Environmental and Social.

FTSE4Good Index Series

FTSE Russell (the trading name of FTSE International Limited and Frank Russell Company) confirms that OMV has been independently assessed according to the FTSE4Good criteria, and has satisfied the requirements to become a constituent of the FTSE4Good Index Series. OMV has been confirmed as a constituent of FTSE4Good Index Series consecutively every year since 2015. Created by the global index provider FTSE Russell, the FTSE4Good Index Series is designed to measure the performance of companies demonstrating strong Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) practices. The FTSE4Good indices are used by a wide variety of market participants to create and assess responsible investment funds and other products.


MSCI Global Sustainability Index: AAA (highest score)
In 2020, OMV Aktiengesellschaft received a rating of AAA (on a scale of AAA-CCC) in the MSCI ESG Ratings assessment.1 OMV receives "AAA" rating for the eighth year in a row. This score places OMV among the best 10% oil and gas companies in terms of ESG performance. OMV is listed in two MSCI ESG Indexes: MSCI ACWI ESG Leaders Index and MSCI ACWI SRI Index.



OMV is ranked in the top 5% of the Oil & Gas Producers Industry in Sustainalytics’ ESG Risk Ratings as of October 2020, achieving a score of 28.4 (medium risk). OMV’s management of sustainability is rated as strong.


STOXX® Global ESG Leaders indices
OMV is regularly being assessed by Sustainalytics since 2014. With the result announced in January 2018, OMV is included in the STOXX® Global ESG Leaders index again, for the fourth consecutive year.

STOXX® Global ESG Leaders index is the representation of the leading global companies in terms of environmental, social and governance criteria, based on ESG indicators provided by Sustainalytics.


In 2016 OMV has been included in the ECPI Indices for the first time and scored EE-, stating that „ the company shows a clear long-term strategic attitude, sound operational management practices and positive actions to tackle social and environmental needs”.


In 2021, OMV achieved the Platinum Medal in the annual EcoVadis sustainability assessment for the first time. EcoVadis is a provider of universal sustainability ratings, with more than 75,000 companies from over 200 industries taking part and committing to ensuring responsible sourcing throughout the supply chain. This result places OMV in the top 1 percent of all 75,000 companies rated globally by EcoVadis.


As per June 2020, OMV is included in the Euronext Vigeo indices Europe 120 and Eurozone 120, and is thus among 120 companies in Europe and the Eurozone region with the most advanced Environmental, Social and Governance performance according to Vigeo Eiris. Euronext is the primary exchange in the Eurozone and plays a key role at the heart of Europe’s capital and financial markets.
