Hydrogen plays a central role in energy technology for achieving climate targets and reducing carbon emissions. Hydrogen has the highest energy content per kilogram of all energy carriers available to us. It is colorless, odorless, non-toxic, and makes an enormous contribution in mobility as well as in industry.
Production and supply of green hydrogen
The valuable energy carrier hydrogen is produced with the help of so-called electrolysis. Electricity is used to split the water molecule H2O into its two components. The result is the coveted resource hydrogen. However, hydrogen only becomes sustainable and green when renewable energy is used in the course of electrolysis. OMV, together with Kommunalkredit AG, is investing EUR 25 million in a green electrolysis plant in order to be able to produce up to 1,500 tons of green hydrogen annually, starting in 2023.
Use cases of hydrogen for OMV
In heavy goods and bus transport
We see a high potential of hydrogen especially in freight transport and public transport, where electrification is often difficult or impossible. Therefore, the contribution that hydrogen can make in the sector that is difficult to electrify is enormous.
In the industry
In Schwechat, we have been using so-called gray hydrogen for years to produce sulfur-free diesel and gasoline. Hydrogen is called "gray" when it is produced from hydrocarbons such as natural gas. Whereas green hydrogen is renewable and produced in an electrolysis process by splitting water with sustainably produced electricity. We intend to use the green hydrogen to hydrogenate bio-based and fossil fuels in order to substitute gray hydrogen in the refinery.
