Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) performance

At OMV, we place great importance in working with the ESG rating agencies. This helps us drive sustainability agenda forward and to make continuous improvements in terms of sustainability.

Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI World)
OMV is included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI World) since 2018. The inclusion was confirmed for the second consecutive time in September 2019, positioning OMV among the top 10% oil and gas companies in terms of Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) performance. OMV is the only Austrian company included in the DJSI World Index. Launched in 1999, the DJSI World represents the gold standard for corporate sustainability and is the first global index to track the leading sustainability-driven companies based on RobecoSAM’s analysis of financially material ESG factors.

Industry Mover in RobecoSAM Yearbook

RobecoSAM distinguishes OMV as “Industry Mover” in its Yearbook  2019, demonstrating the largest proportional improvement in its sustainability performance compared to the previous year within the top 15% of the industry.
In 2018, 2,686 companies across 60 industries were assessed in the SAM Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) – widely known as RobecoSAM. Based on this assessment, the 2019 Yearbook summarizes the results, placing companies with the most significant economic, environmental and social performance in Gold, Silver, Bronze Class of Award.

Every year since 2004, The Sustainability Yearbook has showcased the sustainability performance of the world’s largest companies in each industry as determined by their score in RobecoSAM’s annual Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA).

S&P Europe 350 ESG Index
OMV is one of the 238 companies included in the S&P Europe 350 ESG Index - one of the recently launched sustainability focused S&P indices. Following SAM's Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA), OMV is one of 5 companies in the SAM industry to be included in the S&P Europe 350 ESG Index, with an S&P DJI ESG score of 90.76. The index targets 75% of each GICS1 Industry Group's market cap with inclusion in part determined by this ESG score.

CDP Climate Change

At the end of January 2019, CDP published the results of its latest analysis of 6,937 companies worldwide in the climate change category. Here OMV was awarded the ranking of "Leadership A–“ for the third time in a row. This makes OMV one of the top eleven companies in the global oil and gas sector. In Austria OMV is one of the four highest ranked companies regardless of sector.

Since 2011, OMV has been providing data to CDP for it to evaluate its transparency and performance with regard to climate change. 

CDP is a not-for-profit charity that runs the global disclosure system for the management of environmental impacts. The CDP methodology provides a score which assesses progress towards environmental stewardship and CDP has built up the world's most comprehensive collection of self-reported environmental data.


OMV attained Prime Status according to the ISS-oekom rating with a score of B-, which positions the Company among the top 5% oil and gas companies with the best ESG performance.

Institutional Shareholder Services Inc. (ISS) is the world’s leading provider of corporate governance and responsible investment (RI) solutions for asset owners, asset managers, hedge funds, and asset service providers. ISS’ experienced research team provides comprehensive proxy analyses and complete vote recommendations for approximately 40,000 meetings annually in around 117 markets worldwide. ISS provides updates on a company score in the categories of Governance, Environmental and Social.

FTSE4Good Index Series

FTSE Russell (the trading name of FTSE International Limited and Frank Russell Company) confirms that OMV has been independently assessed according to the FTSE4Good criteria, and has satisfied the requirements to become a constituent of the FTSE4Good Index Series. OMV has been confirmed as a constituent of FTSE4Good Index Series consecutively every year since 2015. Created by the global index provider FTSE Russell, the FTSE4Good Index Series is designed to measure the performance of companies demonstrating strong Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) practices. The FTSE4Good indices are used by a wide variety of market participants to create and assess responsible investment funds and other products.


MSCI2 Global Sustainability Index: AAA (highest score)
OMV is listed in two MSCI ESG Indexes: MSCI ACWI ESG Leaders Index and MSCI ACWI SRI Index. The Company received "AAA" score for the sixth year in a row. This score places OMV among the best 11% oil and gas companies in terms of ESG performance.

For more than 40 years, MSCI’s research-based indexes and analytics have helped the world’s leading investors build and manage better portfolios. MSCI serves 99 of the 100 largest money managers, according to the most recent Pensions & Investments ranking.


OMV is rated as “Outperformer” in Environmental and Social performance by Sustainalytics, while in the Governance segment OMV is rated as a “Leader” – the top performing category. Sustainalytics is a leading global provider of Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) and Corporate Governance research and ratings. Based on Sustainalytics’ ESG Ratings, OMV is ranked 9th out of 119 rated Oil & Gas Producers. The company is assessed as being at medium risk of experiencing material financial impact from ESG factors.  Although the company faces high exposure to sustainability-related risks, OMV demonstrates strong management of these risks. OMV is ranked 5th out of 45 companies in the Integrated Oil and Gas subindustry in terms of lowest risk ranking.

STOXX® Global ESG Leaders indices
OMV is regularly being assessed by Sustainalytics since 2014. With the result announced in January 2018, OMV is included in the STOXX® Global ESG Leaders index again, for the fourth consecutive year.

STOXX® Global ESG Leaders index is the representation of the leading global companies in terms of environmental, social and governance criteria, based on ESG indicators provided by Sustainalytics.


In 2016 OMV has been included in the ECPI Indices for the first time and scored EE-, stating that „ the company shows a clear long-term strategic attitude, sound operational management practices and positive actions to tackle social and environmental needs”.


OMV has been assessed by EcoVadis – the first collaborative platform providing supplier sustainability ratings for global supply chains.

EcoVadis is the trusted partner for procurement organizations in more than 150 leading multinationals worldwide. After the assessment by EcoVadis in 2017, OMV has been awarded a silver recognition level. This good result places OMV among the top 30% performers evaluated by EcoVadis. 


Rating of OMV as responsible supplier

OMV´s sustainability performance is regularly assessed by our key customers as part of their supply chain assessment and their assigned supply chain assessment platforms, such as EcoVadis and NQC BMW.
OMV has been recognized by EcoVadis with the silver status. This good result placed the company among the top 30% evaluated performers. NQC BMW awarded OMV with the Green score (top performers).
