Future Mobility

Natural gas is non-toxic, invisible and fragrance-free. It is lighter than air and more energetically usable than conventional fuels. Natural gas is a combustible, naturally occurring gas mixture found in underground reservoirs. It often occurs along with petroleum as it arises in a similar way. Natural gas consists mainly of highly flammable methane, but the exact composition depends on the deposit.
Natural gas vehicles are increasingly using liquefied natural gas (LNG), but usually driving with compressed natural gas (CNG).

Natural gas as a fuel is extremely cheap and saves money on every tank filling. Natural gas burns dust- and particle-free and harmful exhaust gases are reduced to a minimum. Thus, compressed natural gas (also called CNG - compressed natural gas) is a cheap and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional fuels.

Using natural gas as a fuel represents more than just saving money, through the reduction of harmful emissions, natural gas also saves society long term costs and helps to fulfil the international climate protection agreement. In contrast with diesel or gasoline, compressed natural gas combustion is almost free of soot and particulates. Therefore, harmful emissions are reduced to a minimum. More than 20 % lower carbon dioxide and 75 % lower nitrogen ooxide emissions enable CNG to excel in comparison to gasoline.

If you cover high distance, a natural gas vehicle definitely represents value for money. In as little as one to two years, the higher initial outlay is financed through both better fuel economy and the lower price of natural gas. At the pump you only pay around half the price; at OMV filling stations one kilo of natural gas is at least EUR 0.10 cheaper than gasoline. With this kilo, however, you can travel the same distance as with about 1.5 litres of gasoline. Therefore, if converted, in the case of gasoline up to 50 % costs can be saved and with diesel, a third.

CNG is currently available in Austria at around 160 public filling stations. This means that driving through Austria powered by natural gas represents no problem at all.

LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) involves the transport of gas by LNG tanker ships.

The gas is liquefied by cooling to a temperature of minus 162°C. The volume is then around 1/600th of the original gas volume. This permits the transcontinental transport of gas on ships independently of existing pipeline systems.

Hydrogen is one of the most important energy resources for an environmental friendly future. Hydrogen can be transported in liquid form, as well as in gas form and his energy can be released controllably. When hydrogen is being released, there are no harmful emissions and gases led out – the only thing that gets out is steam. 2012, OMV opened the first public filling station for hydrogen-powered cars in Austria.  The alternative drive concept has been a research topic of OMV for many years and represents a further step towards sustainability and pollution-free mobility.

In the transportation sector, hydrogen is mostly used in combination with fuel cell applications. Fuel cells are highly efficient and clean electrochemical energy converters. They convert the chemical energy of hydrogen directly into electricity. Their efficiency is twice as high in vehicles, for example, than that of internal combustion engines.

Fuel cell vehicles can be refuelled in three minutes with the gas and then have more than 500 kilometres range. Therefore, they are just as usable as the competition with internal combustion engine. In addition, hydrogen fuel columns can be easily added to existing gas stations. However, due to the high investment and operating costs, they are currently still very expensive.

The fuel mix at the filling station of the future will be far more diverse than today. Even though fossil fuels will continue to play a major role, electro mobility in the form of electricity and hydrogen are already present and will continue to gain popularity. This is why OMV is also supporting these sustainable road options and has joined SMATRICS with an interest of 40%. The remaining shares in SMATRICS are held by VERBUND with 40% and SIEMENS with 20%.
