Hywind Tampen – The world’s first renewable power for offshore oil and gas.
Hywind Tampen will be the world’s first floating wind farm to power offshore oil and gas platforms. 11 floating wind turbines with a total capacity of 88 MW will partly electrify the Gullfaks and Snorre assets in the Norwegian North Sea offsetting 200,000 tons of CO2 emissions and 1,000 tons of NOx emissions per year. The reduction in CO2 emissions is equivalent to 100,000 cars.
Together with the license partners in Gullfaks and Snorre, OMV made the final investment decision for Hywind Tampen back in 2019. The project is investing approximately EUR 650 mn to complete the floating wind farm. 5 out of the 11 turbines will partly electrify Gullfaks and reduce power generation from existing gas turbines. ENOVA, which is a Norwegian government enterprise responsible for promotion of environmentally friendly projects, will cover around 35% of the project investment. The project will contribute to further development of floating offshore wind technology and reduce the cost of future offshore wind farms. As a participant in Hywind Tampen OMV has access to the technology developed in the project for a limited period.
The construction of the wind farm started in 2020 with concrete structures built by Kværner at Stord and Dommersnes. When the substructures were finished at Dommersnes they were towed to Gulen for assembly in spring 2022. The first turbine was finalized in June 2022 and towed out offshore, and at the end of August, 7 turbines have been installed offshore. The wind turbines are be towed the 140 km distance from shore to the Tampen area and anchored up between the Snorre and the Gullfaks fields. Power cables will be installed to connect the wind farm to the Gullfaks and Snorre platforms. All 11 turbines are expected to be installed during the first half of 2023.
