Hywind Tampen - the world's largest floating wind farm

To supply producing oil and gas platforms with renewable electricity, construction of Hywind Tampen – the world's first floating wind farm – began off the Norwegian coast in 2020. Power generation commenced in the third quarter of 2022 and the farm is fully operational as of August 2023. The floating wind turbines will meet part of the electricity needs of the Gullfaks and Snorre fields and replace gas as an energy source.

The partnership in Hywind Tampen will enable OMV to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions from the Norwegian non-operated assets, according to General Manager Knut Mauseth.

OMV and its license partners in Gullfaks and Snorre have invested approximately EUR 650 million in Hywind Tampen. Of this, ENOVA, a Norwegian state-owned enterprise contributing to the transition to a low-emission society, will cover approximately 35% of the financing costs.

The project

The concrete structures were built in Stord and Dommersnes and transported from Dommersnes to Gulen for final assembly. The turbines were towed the 140 km distance from the coast of Norway to their destination in Tampen, anchored between the Snorre and Gullfaks fields, and connected to the production platforms via power cables.

The wind farm consists of 11 floating wind turbines based on the so-called Hywind concept. Hywind Tampen has a system capacity of 88 MW and is expected to cover about 35% of the annual need for electricity on the 5 platforms Snorre A and B and Gullfaks A, B and C. The project was completed in 5 years, with 60% of the contract values in the project awarded to Norwegian suppliers – this has contributed to new activity, green jobs, local ripple effects, and technology development for future floating offshore wind projects in a growing industry.

Various facts about Hywind Tampen
